Affordable for everyone

£5 a session, pay as you go, no contracts. Our competitive squad is completely free, so money is never the reason a young boxer stops.

Community, not profit

Intense Boxing is run by a not-for-profit Community Interest Company. Every pound goes back into the gym and the young people who train in it.

Safe & welcoming

Qualified England Boxing coaches, a safeguarding policy and a friendly, respectful atmosphere. Beginners, girls and women, and nervous first-timers are all very welcome.

The Intense Boxing bee

Why a bee? The Intense Boxing bee comes from Muhammad Ali’s famous line, Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

Professionals who use Intense

Paid professional boxers use this gym in their own time with their professional coaches to improve and get better — proof the facility and coaches are world class. Our kids’ and adults’ club sessions are separate; the amateur pathway sits with Advanced Kids and England Boxing competition.

Community & impact

A not-for-profit amateur boxing club for Plymouth

Intense Boxing is a community amateur boxing club run as a CIC — built for local kids and adults first, and structured so funders and partners can see exactly who we are.

01

Accessible sport

£5 pay-as-you-go sessions, first session free, cash or card on the night. No contracts. Cost is never the reason someone cannot start.

02

Youth pathway

From age 6 recreational classes to a free Advanced Kids competitive squad (ages 10–17) on the England Boxing pathway.

03

Community wellbeing

Confidence, discipline, fitness and mental health through boxing. A track record of opening the doors wider when Plymouth needs it.

04

World-class standard

Professionals choose Intense to improve with their own coaches — and local beginners train in the same world-class facility. Our amateur pathway is the free Advanced Kids England Boxing squad.

Intense Boxing has been part of Plymouth since 2011 (covered by Plymouth Live). In January 2025 the club became INTENSE ABC CIC, a Community Interest Company: a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee with an asset lock, so its money and equipment can only ever be used for community benefit.

We exist so that confidence, discipline, fitness and a pathway into elite amateur sport are not locked behind a membership fee. Cost is deliberately low: £5 pay-as-you-go, first session free, and a free Advanced Kids competitive squad (ages 10–17).

  • Outcomes that matter: confidence, self-discipline, mental health and wellbeing, youth diversion into positive sport, and a clear England Boxing pathway.
  • Youth focus: 7 of our 10 weekly coached sessions (11.5 hours a week) are for under-18s.
  • Access first: no contracts, cash or card on the night, loan gloves available for trials.
  • Working with local partners to reach more young people across Plymouth.
  • Track record of opening the doors wider when the city needs it – including free women's confidence and self-defence classes reported by Plymouth Live in March 2021.

Local partners & sponsors

JEM Scaffolding is our principal sponsor — with Intense for many years. Secondary partners: Lewis Scaffolding Services, JAM Nationwide Auto Recoveries and James & Sons Building Services. With thanks also to TK Building.

Our vision

From community club to South West sports hub

We want to secure this gym building for the community forever, then grow Intense Boxing into a sports institute and pathway for young people who need sport the most — across Plymouth, mid-Devon and Cornwall. That is our ambition. What you see on this site today is the live club; the bigger picture is labelled clearly as vision.

For funders & partners

Help us keep boxing accessible in Plymouth

INTENSE ABC CIC is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company with an asset lock. Grants, sponsorship and partnership support go straight into coaching, kit, facility costs and free or low-cost sessions for young people. Safeguarding & welfare

Young people’s safety comes first. As an England Boxing affiliated club we follow England Boxing’s safeguarding and child-protection policies.

  • Club Welfare Officer: David Jeffery – contact via the club on WhatsApp 07939 583972 or intenseboxing11@outlook.com; a child welfare officer attends sessions
  • All coaches are fully DBS checked and England Boxing-qualified (Level 1 or Level 2)
  • First-aid cover is arranged for sessions [confirm: confirm first-aider at every session]
  • Parents may stay inside for the first 1–2 sessions so a child settles. Staying longer requires a full England Boxing DBS check
  • Sparring only when a coach decides a boxer is ready, with headguards and gumshields, matched by age, weight and experience [confirm: sparring policy]

Any concern, however small: speak to our Welfare Officer, David Jeffery, or a coach, or contact England Boxing’s safeguarding team directly. If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

How much does boxing cost at Intense Boxing?

Adult classes, 6–9s and Kids Beginners are £5 per session, pay as you go. The Advanced Kids competitive squad (ages 10–17) is free. There are no contracts, joining fees or monthly memberships, and your first session is free. Cash or card accepted.

Is the first session really free?

Yes. Every newcomer – adult or child – gets their first session free as a trial. Just message us on WhatsApp on 07939 583972 so we know you’re coming.

What age can my child start boxing?

From age 6. Our 6–9 Year Olds class (Tuesday and Thursday, 5–6pm) is built for younger children. Juniors aged 10–17 start in Kids Beginners (Tuesday and Thursday, 6–7pm). The free Advanced Kids competitive squad is for ages 10–17.

Do I need any boxing experience or fitness?

No. Most people start with no experience at all. Coaches adapt every session to your level, and you work at your own pace.

What should I bring to my first session?

Comfortable sports clothes, trainers, a water bottle and a small towel. If you have your own boxing gloves and hand wraps, bring them; if not, loan gloves are available for your trial. Have a light snack an hour or two before, not a big meal.

Do I have to spar or fight?

No. You can train for fitness and technique and never spar. Sparring is only for those who want it, when a coach says you’re ready, with the right protective kit [confirm: sparring policy]. Only boxers who choose to compete box in England Boxing bouts.

Can girls and women join?

Absolutely. Girls, boys, women and men all train together in a friendly, respectful environment. The club has a long track record of opening the doors wider when the city needs it – including free women’s confidence and self-defence sessions covered by Plymouth Live in 2021.

Do I need to book?

For your free trial, please message us first on WhatsApp so a coach can welcome you. After that, just turn up to the class and pay £5 on the night – cash or card accepted.

Is there parking?

The gym is at The Old Printworks on Burrington Way (Burrington Industrial Estate, PL5 3LR). There are double yellows directly outside, with plenty of free road parking either side. The gym is on private land, so parking tickets are not issued there. Parents can wait in the car, or in the pool and snooker club upstairs (drinks, snacks and coffee).

Can parents stay and watch?

Parents may stay inside for the first 1–2 sessions so a child settles. Staying longer requires a full England Boxing DBS check. All coaches are fully DBS checked, and a child welfare officer attends sessions.

Yes. Intense Boxing is an amateur boxing club run by INTENSE ABC CIC, a not-for-profit Community Interest Company with an asset lock (company number 16194295). Our coaches hold England Boxing qualifications and our competitive squad box as England Boxing amateurs.
